Hi, if you google Free Church of England, this may help to explain some things to you.  It rather looks as though some clergy of a more evangelical persuasion became disenchanged with the C of E.  and set up on their own. It may well be that your relation was originally ordained into the C of E and then moved to the Free C of E.  Hope this helps. R.

This time I am trying to find something about a father and son in law please Neither appear in the name list on the site first mentioned here :'(
Edward ELLARD on the 1891 and 1901 censuses is listed as;"Church of England Evangelist Preacher" in Stoke on Trent his address is not much help 64 Wood Street in 1891 and 16 Bath St in 1901 neither seem particularly attatched to a Church. up to 1882 he was a baker and locksmith in Willenhall Staffs. So what happened was he suddenly converted by an evangelist did he have training somewhere how long did such training take was it the Church that sent him to Stoke? One tree on An..ry has two photos of him in clerical garb so was he ordained? If so where can I find out where and when?

He had a daughter who married another interesting man described in 1911 as Clerk in Holy Orders  in Huddersfield and in 1901 he was with several other s all evangelists in rooms of the Church Army above five shops in Marylebone. Was he studying to become ordained? Again how can I find anything about him

Hope you can help they seem interesting

Thanks for trying Stone chat,I have so far failed to find either of them I can't find any mention in the on line news papers either I wonder if it would be worth contacting the RO in Litchfield for Edward and for Huddersfield for Thomas. But where would they have been ordained did the Church Army train people for Ordination in Marylebone or  for  Christian social work

The Church Army probably has a web site.  Try googling.  They certainly train evangelists for work within the C of E.

It seems most likely in this case that this is a offshoot or breakaway from the C of E
So normal ideas for chasing priest will not apply
