I looked on 1837 0n-line BMD and could only find a John Gillard born Dorset as follows

John Gillard    Beaminster 1850 Quater Jan-Feb-March   Vol V111  Page 1

No others Born in Dorset Sorry

I am almost sure you have to get the certificate to find out any more details, if you think this guys your man. You could ask someone to look up the 1861 census for the beaminster district of dorset. Its worth a try if you don't want to go to the expense of buying the wrong certificate.
