1861 Census Lookup - possibly Bethnal Green area.
« on: Thursday 28 October 04 06:46 BST (UK) »
Greetings from Queensland, Australia!
Could someone please lookup the 1861 Census for the following - WILLIAM BUTCHER (b. 1843/46, Patching, Sussex).  His father was BENJAMIN BUTCHER (groom), and mother CAROLINE.
Thank you!

Hello Archer

Sorry it's taken such a long time for someone to answer your query, but the 1861 census has only just become widely available.

Can you give any more info on this family yet,as I cannot find the three of them together in 1861.I do have a William with a Benjamin but mum is Catherine (maybe Caroline died?) but dad is a labourer,so not convinced  ::)

Also there is a William living away from home as an apprentice in Kent?

Any clues as to where and when mum and dad were born- I'll try again if you can add more.

Regards

Carol

I agree with Carol ie. this is the most likely family:

1861

5 Manchester .......  , Poplar, Middlesex

Benjamin BUTCHER head mar 47 lab
Catherine wife 50
Priscilla dau 24 servant
Benjamin son 22 engine driver
William son 18 servant
Frederick BROOKES lodger unm 30 blacksmith

All born Sussex (no precise birthplaces given)

:) Many thanks to both of you.
It does look as if that is the correct family.
I got totally confused when, sending for WILLIAM BUTCHER's birth certificate, it arrived stating his mother was 'CAROLINE' not 'CATHERINE'.  Giving her maiden name as 'HARRINGTON', not 'YARRENDEN'.
Hopefully I'm now on the right track, and the solution is the correct one.
