Help me find my lost Grand Uncle
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 13:08 BST (UK) »
I discovered today that the Grand uncle I have been searching for in Canada actually emigrated to New Zealand!! I don't know much about him other than his name was Gordon Clifford Hewitt born Suffolk 1919. His wife was Audrey M (Drew), they married in 1943 and had at least 1 daughter. He emigrated sometime after 1946 to join the New Zealand Navy. If anyone could find anything on them I would be most grateful. This information has come from his Brother who is still going strong at 96 and although I have never met him is writing me his memoires all about my Gran and her childhood!!!
Cheers

Hi JK !

How lucky you are to have a wonderful resource in your Great Uncle ..... that's wonderful !!  :)
New Zealand doesn't have a datebase for service records - but here's the site telling you how to apply for them - hope it helps !!

Thanks Annie,
Yes finding 'old George' has been terrific his memory is unbelievable, he has given me lots of lost info, (he pens me 6 page letters!!) I'm just sad I didn't know him growing up, Hopefully I'll get to meet him very soon.
Regarding Gordon's service records, I'm not sure I can apply as I don't know if he is still alive and don't have any details about his service number, Rank or Regiment etc.
Does NZ have a searchable online death register? Or electoral role index? Guess what I need is some advice on how to search post war records on people.

Hi JK,

Sorry to stick my oar in (but I couldn't resist  ;D).  I found an online record of a Gordon Clifford Hewitt who died on 23 June 1998 in Auckland, New Zealand who was cremated at Manukau Memorial Gardens on 26 June 1998.  The online index is very limited for this cemetery and doesn't give any age details for you to check against his birth year.

www.manukaumemorialgardens.co.nz

And there is a record for an Audrey Joyce Hewitt who died on 12 July 1992 in Auckland who was cremated at North Shore Memorial Park and Crematorium on 15 July 1992.  She was aged 68 when she died which would put year of birth at approximately 1922 or 1923 which is not far off Gordon Hewitt's age so is possibly his wife..... ???

If you give me a few days I should be able to go and find the obituaries for them if you would like so you can check.

Cheers

Hi Bunny,
Thanks, if you have time to find the obit's that would be great. I don't think Gordon or Clifford are very common names so I imagine it would be him. I had Audrey down as Audrey 'M' from her Marriage but it may still be her? It would just be nice to know where they settled after leaving England. Thank you so much.

Electoral rolls are available and easy to search, but obituries are fantastic in New Zealand newspapers.

Good Luck

Hi JK,

Don't give up hope.  I've not forgotten about you.  Just need to find the right time to ditch work and run off and do it!! ;D ;D

I mean, find time in my busy schedule to casually stroll down and spend oodles of time carefully pondering the information. ;)

Cheers
