Ashleigh Road Senior School, Barnstaple
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 15:18 BST (UK) »
Hiya Everyone,

Does anyone have relations who were at Ashleigh Road Senior School, Barnstaple in September 1927-8?
Do you have any old school photographs, please? My Aunt Bunty (Norah Peake) was there at that time.
In 1927, there were 39 pupils in her class. She was older than the average age and was 1st in her class.
In 1928, there were 11 pupils in her class. She was older than the average age and was 1st in her class.

By the way, does anyone have any old pictures of Barnstaple Bakeries Lichden Street branch?

All the Best, Christopher

Dear Christopher,

If you contact the school direct they may be able to help as  they have just held a open day all about the schools history.

Extract from North Devon Journal reads;

The clocks went back last week when more than 100 visitors turned up to a school reunion. Past pupils of Ashleigh Road School were queuing up at the door prior to the opening of an exhibition covering the school's 100 years.

The exhibition was one of two recent events held to celebrate the school's centenary year.
Deputy head teacher, Pauline Allen, said: "The school started off as a mixed council school in 1906, then it was an all girls' secondary school in the 1950s, then a junior school and now a primary school. It has changed all the time."

A request for old photographs turned up trumps with guests pouring over old record books and images from their school days.

All the original building are still there with some porta cabins added as the school has grown.Infact when I was there in the 70s there were porta cabins in the playground then!

Good Luck

Hi
There is a section in http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk
for Barnstaple Secondary School for Girls which it identifies as being on Ashleigh Rd.

If you can contact former puils through there, they might be able to help as well.
