Briggs/Duiett -what am I doing wrong?
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 08:22 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm having probs trying to locate my gg grandfather  George Briggs and his parents in Leicestershire records.
George was born in LEICS (on marriage cert) in abt 1830. A newspaper obit in 1914 said that he was born in Piniwick (haven't been able to locate this place)
His parents: Kate Dueitt/Duiett and John Briggs
John Briggs, his wife and 5 children emigrated to Australia on the Poictiers in 1848.
No death/ burial records for Kate Briggs in Australia.  John briggs died in 1888 aged 84  his wife Ann died in 1867 aged 71 - not married in Aust.
I've purchase 3 potential death certs for Kate (2 in aus & 1 ENG) but no luck.
I think that Kate died in England and John remarried.  1841 census not much help but i found a George Briggs aged 11 servant in Winwick Northamptonshire.
Very few records for Duiett in England.  I have  a photo of a young Duiett woman which dates around 1880's but the relative who gave it to me has no idea who she is - photo just has Duiett written on back.

Would anyone be able to steer me towards finding this family.  I've checked the BDM records and have found one other Kate who died in 1839 maybe this is her but i have no way of verifying that( plus the mistakes are starting to get expensive)
Sorry about the long post but wanted to save unnecessary lookups.

I'd be grateful for any advice as I've been chasing this family for years.
ciao Bertoli

Hi
I forgot to add that I have good info about George and his   descendants in australia from when he married in South Australia in 1857.   I'm still trying to work out the names of his siblings - I have John born abt 1835 and that's all.
cheers
Bertoli

I can't help specifically with names etc but have you thought that the mysterious Piniwick in the 1914 newspaper report might infact be the Winwick of 11 year old George? Winwick is fairly close to the present county boundary.

Good hunting

Thanks Pete. Yep I'm checking out Winwick but haven't been able to locate his mother Kate.  All of the border changes make things interesting :)

Hello Charby
I still don't have much information re the Briggs in England.  Since it has been hard to verify from here (Western Australia) I've been trying to locate as much information re the family in Australia as I can.  The plot is thickening as there may be an Australian Aboriginal connection -though I'm still trying to verify this as well.

The George that I'm trying to find came to australia  in 1848 and he was around 18 at the time.  I'm happy to pass on info as I come across it just incase there is a connection.  I haven't heard of a Lucian but that doesn't mean that there wasn't one -I'll keep a look out.
ciao Chris
