Hi Janice

Thank you very much for the links, extremely useful.
There is a possibility that George W's birth name was in fact Tryon as we have found a family with both Tryons and Steeles in it. So his mother might have been married twice, who knows?.

Many thanks .................. Mike

Matilda Tryon  and George W. Tryon are indeed on the 1901 census...
with all the other older children whose surnames are Steele

Thank goodness, as this was making me nuts!

I think this is Matilda with her first husband in 1881 Census

Brunel & Stephenson, Muskoka, Ontario
(Religion) Church of England
Thomas STEELE  Married  Male English 34 Ontario Farmer
Matilda STEELE  Married  Female English  33  Ontario
Ada STEELE   Female   English   13  Ontario
Annie STEELE   Female   English   11  Ontario
Frances STEELE   Female   English   9  Ontario
Laura STEELE   Female   English   8  Ontario

(On the 1901 census, Matilda's year of birth is 1851, even though it says she is 40)

My head spins when i can't wrap my brain around things...but I have found this same George Tryon's Attestation papers...and it says George WONDER Tryon...So do we have the right man, or was the middle name written wrong either way??
I'm so confused...

I had found the same census, Janice, but thought it would be a stretch between families...so...brain spins once again...

Funny thing is...I am FROM Davidson Sask. raised there as a teen... ;D Cool!

Just read from beginning and you have attestation for George Winter Steele?
Ahh. WW2...well, it is not unusual for a fellow to have fought in both wars...
so this can't be ruled out entirely until all avenues have been searched...
He was discharged early for medical reasons...J.J.
