McKenna in Londonderry
« on: Saturday 15 July 06 18:29 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on my g-g-g-grandfather Alexander McKenna, born about 1808, married Ann Nichols around 1830 and had Jane 1831 and John 1832 before emigrating to Canada about 1833/1834.  Kathy

Hello Kathy,

A belated welcome to RootsChat.

What denomination were Alexander McKenna and Ann Nichols? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or  Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

All of the census records in Canada (Ontario and Quebec) have them as Wesleyan Methodist, but since there was no church they attended the Anglican there.
