I'm in what Russell (Runner) calls my 'I've started, so I'll finish' mode. I'll have a look for James on the 1851 - see if he is in the area, else he would probably be in Ireland if the 1861 is correct.

No sign that I can see. Maybe you could try the Freecen 1841. I've tried on James, his father and his mother both in the area and throughout Scotland.

I think he was Irish but, given that he married in the Free Church, he was probably from the North.

Right - off to meet a fish merchant  ;D

I'll have another search when I get back.

There's no baptism record for him either. Although it could be outhwith the established church,  I think Ireland will have your answers.

thanks gadget, i have too much information now and have to work on it, all the stuff i need now will be after 1900, so there is no more census stuff, i do believe that there was a james mckechnie born in 1911, helensburgh, flora mckechnie born in 1912 helensburgh and helen mckechnie born in 1913 in helensburgh they are the children of james and helen mckechnie, if anyone can help with this family i would be deeply appreciative, as i have now hit a brick wall

Think it might be a question of taking yourself off to a Family History/Records Centre and using local resources. Other than that it's Edinburgh and slogging through the fiche/films.
