GOULD MARRAIGE CERT
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 22:43 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the marraige cert of William James Gould b.1874 to Hannah b.1875. His Father James was born in 1856 somewhere in Ireland . We are hoping that the cert will shed some light on him .
Many thanks
Mrst

Hi

You can now search the full GRO index yourself free of charge at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx  Choose “Complete BMD Index Ranges & Images 1837-1983
The partial index (freebmd) can also be searched on the same website or at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

All that the marriage cert will show is fathers name and occupation.  It will not give you his birthplace

Mrst,

As CaroleW says, an English civil marriage certificate provides only name and occupation for both spouses.

But if your folk were Catholics and you are lucky, the RC church records might provide additional info.

Some early North-East RC church marriage records contain details of parents..... e,g. St Patricks of Felling, provides general addresses for spouses parents who were in England.

For parents who had remained in Ireland, sometimes the parish and townland was provided for the 4 parents. Sometimes even the maiden name of the mothers of bride and groom were provided.

Although census enumerators were required to record the county of birth for Irish folk, many did not.

But if you peruse as many English censuses as you can, you might get lucky and see a county of birth.
