Hi,

I saw this one too but I don't think it is the same Sarah as the one we have living in the Cornish household in 1861.

In 1851, there are two Sarah Critchells in the Bridport area, the one you have just pointed out and the one whom I mentioned earlier, in which the family is listed as Crittchill but has Sarah much closer in age to the one born 1836/37( to John and Ann) and to the 23 year old in the Cornish household ten years later.

Living where I do, there wouldn't be a problem identifying someone with Critchell as a surname but plainly they were fairly thick on the ground in Dorset!

Cheers,

Jen

All extremely interesting - and many thanks. this is a work in progress. One quick question...

Earlier when browsing the census for John Critchell and Ann, I found them in Bridport in 1841. I noticed that two doors down is the Gale family, and now I know (as you point out) John's wife was Ann nee Gale. I think it might be her brother John Gale and family.

Living with that Gale family is a 67-year old called (I think, handwriting is not clear) Jane Cornick. She is said to be a "servant" but more likely to be a nanny or member of the family acting as housekeeper I feel.

Anyway, I wondered at the time whether this was an earlier spelling of Cornish, but I laid it to one side. Today on IGI amongst the baptisms in Bridport I found several for variations of Corneck/Cornick etc.

So it's just an idle thought. Had you come across these variations for Cornish?

I haven't but then I have to admit that I haven't spent a great deal of time on the Cornish family.

I think I said that this is my partner's family. As well as my own tree and his, I am researching the families of several friends so there are times when our own lines are neglected whilst I am busy with someone else. At the moment I am supposed to be putting my files in order for one of the friends, whose 50th birthday is this weekend. But I am very good at being sidetracked when anything interesting turns up!

Let me know if anything else comes to light.

Cheers,

Jen

Hi,

Thanks, I have used the online parish clerk for Dorset and have also found it very useful for various other peoples' ancestors, whom I am researching.

I do suspect that Cornish/ Cornick and Corneck may well have been pretty much interchangeable which does make life a bit more tricky.

Regards,

Jen

Hi Jen' & others !

I'm new to the whole RootsChat experience and am finding it a valuable resource !
I too have CRITCHELLs in Dorset .
John (b abt 1815 , Upwey) and Ann (nee Tizard ? b abt 1808 , Maiden Newton) .
Daughters Unity ( b March 1838 , Radipole or Upwey) , Sarah (b abt 1840 , Upwey) & son George ( b abt 1844 , Upwey)
John was a gardener & Ann a School Mistress . Found them in 1851 & '61 Census' .
Unity ( sometime transcribed as Vanity or even Eunice !) married in Westbury-on-Trym in 1864 to widower Samuel Jackson from Nantwich who apparently fell in love with her when he saw a picture of her ( How ? Where ? I don't know !)
They had 8 children together , their 2nd child Harry Ernest JACKSON (B 1866 m 1892 d 1944) was my Grt-Grandfather.

If anyone else has any connections with these I'd be happy to share other info .

Cheers
Andy
