Liverpool Tailor Shop - Completed with thanks
« on: Tuesday 18 July 06 00:43 BST (UK) »
Interested in Clothing Merchant or Tailor Shop located on St. James in Liverpool in the 1820s. The Shop belonged to my ggg grandfather John McKey. I have been told by family members the name of the shop was  "The Sign of the Golden Fleece".  He died aboard ship on way to America in 1852.  Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Gores Directory  1825 Trades

McKey John. Tailor & Draper 5, St James Place Liverpool

Pigots 1828/9 under surname only Mckey Tailor

Your Mckey is the only one in two books of over a thousand pages.

Celia -

Many thanks for the information. ;D

Just a couple of related questions ... Are you aware if either Gores Directories or Pigots is available on line. Were these annual publications? I "googled" and didn't get any hits for either publication.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my posting.

Yes  i am very aware ;Di have been doing lookups in the library for about two years now.Because we have the Cheshire/liverpool directories or Postal directories. I also use the the on line a lot thats where i found yours but it's very time consuming and slow so i only use it to get info for myself usually .In fact i have just finished  putting on disk all the pubs for Lanashire 1828/9 1824/54/59/47/94/ and seven years for Cheshire. If you ever need a look up for liverpool send me post.

Forgot to say the directories are like phone directories very thick and heavy. I am not sure what the object is of still printing them. They go up to 1980 in the library i think but most of the 1900 they dont have. They have them from middle 1700 down. If you want the website just typ in
Historical Directories.

Celia -

Great information. I will try historical directories on the web. At least I now know the directories were in existence for several years.

I'm not sure how long my ggg grandfather actually owned the tailor shop or if he sold to his oldest son who stayed in England.  However, one of my ggg grandfathers youngest sons eventually owned a tailor shop here in America.

Thanks again for your wealth of information and I may take you up on your "lookup" offer.
