Anyone out there know where records pertaining to Ferns are held? My 3x gt grandfather James Mitchell was born there in circa 1817. He joined the Army (82nd regiment) at some point and had children all over the place including Portsmouth in hampshire. Any help would be fantastic ashe is the preverbial brick wall!

Hello artypants,

What denomination was your 3x great grandfather James Mitchell ? Was he a members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or possibly a Presbyterian?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
