Kings Walden - TOMLIN & COOK
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 16:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all
This is my first post to the Herts board.
My ggg g'father, James Tomlin (b 1807) and his wife Martha (Cook) are on the 1841 census (ref Ho 107 / 4 / 13 - page 11).
Their son's birth certificate gives place of birth as Mill End, Luton.  On IGI, i get an uncredited marriage date of 24 Oct 1832.

For James senior, per IGI, he was born of James Tomlin and Mary (batch c072561), and I can find James Tomlin marrying Mary Mann (batch m016751).  Do you think this is a good find?

If so, can anyone shed any light further back on the Tomlin's?

Also, can anyone shed any light on Martha Cook?  The 1851 census gives her birthplace as Luton.

They disappear on the 1861 census (as does James junior) - any suggestions?

Thanks,  Jules

Hi Jules,

Welcome to the Hertfordshire board.

How do you know where James  was born - the '41 census just says out of county and his age is rounded  - presume you have other proof?

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith
The 1851 census lists James (Senior) b'place as Kingswarden, Herts.  I can list the ref tonight when I have access to my files.  I can't find a place called Kingswarden, so I assumed it was Kings Walden.
Also, from memory (which I can again check tonight) the county of birth varies between Beds and Herts (or Bucks & Herts) on later census's !
I'll look it up tonight.
Cheers  Jules

The 1851 ref is HO107/1502/folio 132/page 132/house 183.  James Senior is shown as born in Kingsward, Herts and Martha in Luton, Beds.

They disappear on the 1861 folio (incl. James Jnr) - I know that in 1857 they lived in Hoxton, as they had a daughter, Mary Ann  (per IGI batch C037612).

I think there are missing pages in the census as I can't trace them.

Cheers  Jules

Hi Jules,

The parish records for Codicote includes an entry for  the publication of the banns of James Tomlin of this parish and Mary Mann of Luton in Beds on 26th September, 2nd and 9th October 1803 but there is no reference to the marriage having taken place.

Hi Peter
Just back from holiday!  Thx for the response.
Do you think they got married elsewhere (or do banns have to be in the church where they are to marry?)
Cheers   Jules
