MCINTOSH & MAIN (Nairn fisherfolk living near the harbour)
« on: Thursday 20 July 06 17:02 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the MCINTOSH/MACKINTOSH family from Park Street and MAIN families from both Park and Society Streets in Nairn. These streets are quite near the harbour as both families were fisherfolk. My direct descendants lived at;

MCINTOSH - 9 & 17 Park Street
John (m. about 1841) Ann MAIN, children Jane, Thomas, Margaret, Ann & Isabella*
Thomas (m. 1873) Margaret MAIN, children Thomas, Isabella, Ann, David, John & Margaret
* Unlike later birth records, the register of Isabella MCINTOSH'S 1856 birth does not show her parent's wedding date.

MAIN - 44 Society Street
John (m. pre-1841) Isabella MAIN, children Janet, David, Christina, Isabella, Margaret & Ann

I have the census details for the families 1851-1901, but cannot find them in 1841. Nor could I find the two earlier marriages at SP. Any help appreciated?

1841 has this family at new street in nairn (from freecen)...
MAIN John 25 Seaman
MAIN Isobella 20
MAIN David 3m
BARRON    Ann 5

all were listed as born in nairn.

and from the igi there was a david main born about 1840 to john and isabella main, although it is a submitted entry - could this be the family you are looking for?

the following marriages are on igi:

ANN MAIN
Spouse: JOHN MACKINTOSH
Marriage: 1841 Nairn

JOHN MAIN
Spouse: ISABELLA MAIN
Marriage:08 DEC 1844 Nairn

JOHN MAIN COGS
Spouse: ISABELLA MAIN
Marriage:22 NOV 1838 Nairn

there is also a submitted entry relating to the 1st in the list here and it states that ann's father is called thomas...

hope this helps a little.
kind regards,
Lorna.

Lorna,

Thanks heaps. "Coggs" was the Tee-name for one branch of my Mains and I think you've nailed the other two families also.

Many thanks,

Andrew
