STRODE - PENNY family of Pilton and Shepton Mallet
« on: Friday 21 July 06 16:03 BST (UK) »
If anyone has access to the Shepton Mallet registers, would they be able to let me have baptismal details for the following:

Matilda Strode Penny (born about 1798
Joseph Isaac Penny (born about 1801)
Barnard Strode Penny (born about 1808)

Any other members of this family would be very welcome.

I think they will turn out to be children of Joseph Isaac Penny who married Eleanor Strode at Shepton Mallet in 1790, but I am happy to be corrected.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Philip Candy

Hello Philip,

Will have a look at this.

There are many people named Penny in Pilton and Shepton Mallet in the 1841 and 1851 census returns. Do you have details of these?

The Strode family are connected to Southill House in East Cranmore. The book "Two Estates" has everything on these.

Hello Phil,

I've been digging into the Richmond side of my family and Mary Ellen Richmond, my grandmother, was born in Hoxton in 1885.

From there I've got back to her father, Edward Robert Richmond, born in Highbridge, Somerset in 1864 and his father, George Frederick Richmond, born in Croscombe, a small village 2 miles from Shepton Mallet in 1834.

From there I've had a few problems but I know from George Frederick's wedding certificate that his father's name was William Richmond.

I'm pretty sure from my research that this William Richmond married Matilda Strode-Penny because I've got a copy of a death certificate for Matilda Strode Richmond, who died on 15th March 1865 in Pilton, aged 67.

I've also got a copy of her Last Will and Testament which shows that she made her brother, Joseph Isaac Penny and a friend, William Gane, her executors.

In the will she left property to three sons, George Frederick Richmond, Henry Strode Richmond and William Richmond.

I know that at the time of the 1861 Census she was living in Town Street, Shepton Mallet with her unmarried daughter, Eleanor, aged 23.

An Eleanor Matilda Strode Richmond was born n the quarter Jan/Mar 1838.

Although not having positive proof that the William who married Matilda was in fact my great, great, great grandfather, I think the fact that one of her sons was named George Frederick Richmond & my great, great grandfather had a daughter named Mary Matilda suggests that I've got the right couple.

Sorry if this has been a bit long winded. If you want any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

There are Strode-Pennys here in NZ. Must be some connection.

Barnard Strode PENNY married Eleanor HUGHEY in 1888.
William Strode PENNY married Feodorma Hottezzi DE CORTANDO in 1901

There is a death for a Barnard Strode PENNY in 1920, aged 61. Birth 1859

Hello Ian,

Thank you very much for your postings; I seem to have started the ball rolling again on this posting.

You've now managed to get me back a further generation than I had known about before with the Strode/Penny line.

I was just wondering if you would have any information on the birth dates of William & Matilda's three sons, or when William Richmond was born/died.

Once again, thanks for your input.

Hello there,

There are children of Barnard Strode Penny and Ann Penny being baptised in Shepton Mallet in the 1830s.

13/08/1835 William Penny son of Barnard Strode Penny and Ann Penny. Father's abode shown as Mill Hams and he is a Miller. This is also shown as a private baptism.

Born 09/11/1839, baptised 09/11/1839, Barnard Strode Penny, son of Barnard and Ann Penny. Again, a private baptism and the child was born the same day. Father's abode Mill Hams and occupation a Miller.

Many of the Somerset Parish Registers have been transcribed and are online at http://www.freereg.org.uk

Could the Strode name be connected to the Strode family of Southill House in Cranmore? These were sometimes called Chetham Strode.
