Lair list lookup? Lochmaben area
« on: Saturday 22 July 06 15:53 BST (UK) »
I'm not familiar with how deaths and burial were recorded in the 1800's.

I need help locating  death and/or burial dates and places for James Lockerbie and his wife Jean Gilchrist Lockerbie.  They had two kids that I know of : Jean Smith Lockerbie born 1801 in parish of Urr and James born in 1807 parish of Kirkgunzeon .  I don't think they remained there but returned to Dumfriesshire.

Their son James married Mary Ann Pearson of Dalton about 1823 and had 3 children in the Lochmaben area.

If anyone could help me out I'd be grateful.

Hi susan3,

If any of them died after 1855, have you tried Scotland's People for death certificates? http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Your best bet if they died before this, would probably be to try and get a hold of Monumental Inscriptions for Churchyards around where your ancestors died or find out where each Church's Burial Records are kept, local libaries may be able to help.

I know there are various pre-1855 publications by Mitchell & Mitchell but I don't know exactly which areas they covered.

Have a wee look here: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/library/libraryindex.htm., you might see something.

Good Luck

Anne

Hi Anne
they definitely died before 1855, and I have no acces to research anything in Scotland libraries I live in NY.  I was hoping I could find someone do do a lookup in those monumental inscritions you had mentioned.    Susan

It might well be that they did not have a monument. The lair lists looks like the best bet.

These I believe are held in the relevant District offices throughout the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council area.

It would be worth exploring

http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/dumgal/

for a contact. I phoned them a few years ago and they were very helpful and passed me on to the appropriate office. Unfortunately the lair books were not extant for the time I wanted but the staff then referred me to a lovely man who gave me so much information, I just forgot about lairs  :)

Sessions minutes might also have information but  they are held in Edinburgh now unless they were photocopied locally.

It might also be worthwhile contacting the D&G FHS

http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/

the volunteers there are super. I am a member so can have a certain number of lookups.
