Huddersfield marriages
« on: Monday 24 July 06 22:09 BST (UK) »
I am about to visit the Society of Genealogists to find (hopefully) my Huddersfield marriages between 1808 and 1835. My relevant ancestors lived in Golcar, Lindley, Longwood and Scammonden. I am assuming the marriages would have been at St Peter's, Huddersfield. Does anyone know if they could have been married anywhere else? They were not married at Elland or Halifax.

Hi,
Have you looked at this website which details all areas around Huddersfield?

  www.hdfhs.org.uk

I noticed that you have the surname Chadwick in your list and my husband's

grandmother's maiden name was Chadwick and she was from Golcar maybe there is a

connection.

Many thanks Parky and Joe. I was aware of the website you mention, but none of the publications are helpful to me with my specific queries. I am finding my Huddersfield marriages very difficult, as I can't find any publications or online sources which cover them, hence my forthcoming visit to SOG! It's only 40 miles or so to London, compared to 200 to West Yorkshire.

I think I have been spoiled with researching my Halifax lines, as so much is available for them online.

Parky, my Chadwick is Mary Chadwick, born in Fixby in about 1795. She married William Singleton in 1813, and they lived in Lindley, then Longwood. I don't know her parents yet.

Hi Anne

There are quite a few churches in Huddersfield, and from previous experience when searching for baptisms and marriages, they were in a church I would at least expect, and found myself searching through all the ones in the centre, till I managed to find what I was after.

You could try St Stephens church in Lindley, you may find what you are after there.

Hi Janette

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I'll try St Peter's first, and cast my net wider if I need to. Given the dates, I'm not sure the chapelries would have been doing marriages.
