1861 Census Lookup please-Llandefeilog-JONES
« on: Wednesday 26 July 06 03:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would someone please be so kind to help me find Mary JONES age 14 born in Llandefeilog? She is not recorded at home with her family, in the hamlet of Idole, on that day. Thanks.

Regards,
Lynnwin

Hi Lynnwin

There were three Mary Jones in Llandefeilog b. 1847 +/-2, and only one of them was a servant.

1861: RG9/4136/46/12
Gelly Geiros? Hamlet of Moelfre, Llandefeilog, Carmarthenshire
David Davies, head, mar, 68, farmer, b. Cayo, Carmn
Jemima Davies, wife, mar, 48, b. Cayo, Carmn
Mary Jones, serv, unmar, 14, house servant, b. Llandefeilog, Carmn

Heh, I was looking for Joneses in Llandefeilog just yesterday!  :D

Cheers

:D  I was scouring census images to find occupations - the only way to track some names in Wales. Of course first you have to work out the names of the towns and areas - thank God for the gazetteer of Welsh names, and the OldMaps website ... and the UK map websites ... and my atlas on the shelf!!

I got there in the end, and found the ones I was looking for!  :)  Phew!

Yes, now I next have the daunting task to find a marriage for Mary, yikes! Another thing the censuses images sometimes reveal is relatives living right next door, which I found today. Especially helpful where Joneses are concerned, heh ;D

How strange! I googled for a map of Llandefeilog and this thread appeared. Just as I was thinking - I really must do some more research on my family tree, especially my mum's side.

Do you know the name of Mary's actual 'home'?

I ask as I'm tracking my ancestry, but so far only got to the 1820s with my maternal family. They are Jones, still living in Idole, been there a few generations.

Even though Idole was so sparsely populated especially in the 1800s (three houses, a few farms and a couple of 'big houses' with land).. we may possibly have a family link. If not, I may have some info or can get pics for you of/from the area if you like. Off back home in a few weeks again.

Gelli Geiros is still there. The name Moelfre has gone - not used to describe the area any longer (as far as I know), although Moelfre farm still exists. Lots of boundary changes over time - it gets confusing.

I'm so stunned to see something...anything about Idole on a site let alone on an ancestry one.. I don't know what else to say lol. Hope the above makes sense.

I've just joined to reply to this thread... so off to have a look-see around the place. Hope I can find my way back here  :o
