Hi Wendy

That info from Mike is really useful (Thanks Mike). As I said I am coming down to Leicester to do some family history. This will be the middle of Feb. I will see what I can dig up (not on the site of Cork Hall !) when I am at the records office. I will travel the route Mike suggests and the wind should not bother me to much as its always windy here in scarborough.
It is really good to see that you have some good connections with Newtown Linford - a very pretty area. My grandmother is down on her birth certificate as being born 2 May 1908 at Cork Hall, her father was Robert Holmes and listed as Gamekeeper on the certificate. In 1910 her ister was born in Newton Harcourt so I am not sure if Rober had left Cork Hall by then but he certainly had by 1912.
Please keep in touch and I will let you know what I find out.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul, Don't forget to take your camera when you go on your walk around Newtown Linford.  The Goadbys lived in a thatched cottage on Main Street - of which I have a photograph with my great grandparents standing outside the front.  I have sent for a book on Newtown Linford today which should be with me sometime this week (hopefully) and I will be able to learn a little bit more about the inhabitants of Newtown Linford.  If you visit the churchyard James Smith's grave is to the left of the churchyard as you go in the lychgate.  Hope the weather stays reasonably fine when you visit Newtown Linford.  Take care

Best wishes
Wendy

Greeting’s Again Wendy & Paul…….

Hot foot from the records Office……….

Cork Hall… Was part of the Estate of
The right Honorable George Harry Grey
The Earls of Stamford & Warrington.
The Grey Family is renowned for Lady Jane Grey 9 day Queen of England.

Due to the decay of “ Bradgate House” within Bradgate Park. …..
They moved to Stewards Hay’s to the North of Groby.
In 1854 George Harry Grey the 7th Earl of Stamford & Warrington
 ( who was your James’s boss ) had a Mansion “ Bradgate House “
built between Groby & Markfield which stands to day owned by the
Granite Company Who’s Quarries now occupy most of the Estate.

I managed to handle the Documents ( Gamekeeper’s Register )
Were James Smith ( Yeoman ) of Newtown Linford
Was made a Game keeper for the 7th. Earl of Stamford & Warrington.
2nd September 1845.

The 7th.Earl ( b 1827 from Burks Peerage )
Was only 18 years old at this time so a John Wildman of Middlesex was made his adviser.
And if you get chance to look at the Trade Directories for 1870.
James is mentioned in this as “ Game Keeper for Cork Hall “

There is another book ( History of  Newtown Linford Village )
I had a look at this afternoon at the Records Office
Were James is mentioned twice….But only the same information as above

Hope this helps. …..

MIKE.

Many thanks Mike, The information on Cork Hall has helped a lot, much appreciated.  Thank you also for the information on the marriage of James and Sarah.  My book arrived today and that has quite a bit of information in about the inhabitants of Newtown Linford - the Goadbys get quite a mention as they were the Blacksmiths in Newtown Linford.  There is a sentence also relating to James Smith being Gamekeeper at Cork Hall, but no further information.  I also know which cottage the earlier Goadbys were living in - Jasmine Cottage, not too far away from the Church.  The Goadbys also married into the Foulds family - Fred Foulds married Polly Goadby in 1896 (she being the sister of William Goadby - and they being the children of William Goadby and Sarah Smith). My Goadby family is now growing quite well with all your help.  I am a direct descendant of Michael Goadby and Ann Johnson and it is quite wonderful to be able to have an insight into the lives of my ancestors.  Thanks again Mike for all your help.

Best wishes
Wendy
