176 Siege Battery RGA 1915-1919
« on: Wednesday 26 July 06 18:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,

From my grandfathers paybook and various papers I know that he was a Gunner, then Lance Bombardier with the 176 Siege Battery R.G.A.  According to the paybook, he was paid in French Francs up to 21st Nov 1917, Italian Lire from 21 Dec 1917. he also had some passes: from Padova to Venice on 11th Jan 1919, from Praglia Convent to Venice on 11th Jan 1919 and from battery position to Sirmione on 17th Sep 1918.

There are also two photographs, written on the backs "Somewhere in France 29 July 1917" and Somewhere in Italy 9 June 1918".

Is there someone with military WW1 knowledge who can tell me where in France and Italy the 176 Siege Battery fought and where I might find out more.

Thanks Harribobs.  I have tried to find out information from the internet but the 176 Siege battery doesn't appear to be well represented at all.

The best I could find is "176 Battery Royal Artillery" who's website says they have changed their name 17 times between 1860 and 1930  ???  They have a website

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ol/

or perhaps contacting the RA Museum at

http://www.firepower.org.uk

Hope it helps
Wendi :)

Random long old thread ressurection.

My great uncle was in the 176 SB - and I have a couple of photos of him and his chums.

I wonder if @suffolkgirl uncovered anything further?
