Hezekiah ABREY
« on: Wednesday 26 July 06 20:37 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Am trying to trace Hezekiah Abrey ( 1832 ) & Eliza nee Kerry who lived in Bulmer in 1861. They had a son Arthur William Abrey ( 1860 ).
They seemed to have vanished after the 61 census.
Any clues that might help ????????

the Arthur Abrey found by Jackie, is really nephew to the wife of the household, Hannah Firman age 25; as also in the family is Ann Kerry, mother in law age 65 widow born Fingringhoe, Essex.   Hannah & your Eliza would be sisters ?

Wigan End was a part of Sudbury that was demolished long ago, it is where the main PO and Somerfields supermarket are today, just beyond The Old Market Place.

Bulmer is just across the river Stour in the county of Essex.

Sudbury St Peter is a redundant church now and is rather like a glorified traffic island in the middle of Market Hill. However, it does host many exhibitions and Farmer's Markets etc so providing a much needed town centre venue.

Hi All

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes Hannah & Eliza were sisters and I have traced quite a few Kerrys & Firmins. However it is Hezekiah & his family who are proving hard to find. I have Arthur as a visitor on the 71 but can find no trace of his parents after 61. At that time they had moved from Fingringhoe to Bulmer Tye and he was working as a groom. Any large houses in Bulmer Tye that would fit the bill ? If the master went away would a groom go with him ?
Thanks also for info about Sudbury St Peter. Albury is a common mis transcription of Abrey and so there could be a link there. Hezekiah is not a common name so could be a relation. Maybe how he got a job in Bulmer whilst living in Fingringhoe.
Should you have anymore thoughts or come across any clues please let me know.

Bulmer is a village in two parts, Bulmer Street and Bulmer Tye.

this link shows a wonderful painting by local artist Thomas Gainsborough, it shows Mr and Mrs andrews who lived at The Auberies, half way along Ballingdon Hill and probably falls within the bounds of Bulmer.

Smeetham Hall, now used as a Wedding Venue, another branch of the Hyde-Parker family live there (also family at Melford Hall, NI property in Long Melford a few miles away).

I think that it might be worth investigating The Auberies  ;)
