Colonel Jacynth d'Ewes Fitz-Ercald Coke and his Sunbeam 25 h.p.
« on: Thursday 27 July 06 22:19 BST (UK) »
I only wish I could give you a more unusual name to look for ;D ;D

I've just bought a 1927 Sunbeam 25 h.p. that was first owned by the Colonel. He bought it in 1928, but it was registered in Scotland, which is a bit odd.

Anyway, thanks to some wonderful peeps on the Suffolk board, I now have him in the 1891 Census, but not in the 1901.

Is it likely that he joined his father's regiment? Would that be a good place for me to start looking?

Thanks

Alan

I was just looking Dave, I've copied the info across here. Perhaps it IS Fitzgerald-Coke, which is how it's recorded at Swansea, and not Fitz-Ercald Coke.

His medal card is available online at TNA

Thanks to the Foad Family and Fordy for the info - some new stuff there.  :)

I'm currently concentrating on getting the car back on the road! It failed its MOT with brake problems and, as per usual with old cars, in taking the wheels off and the brake shoes out to send them off for re-lining, I found some other problems. It's on axle-stands in the garage, the wheels are off being respoked, painted and trued up.

As far as research goes I have a few leads. Col Coke's son William married Bridget Owen on May 7th 1947. I need to follow that up to see if I can find them.

I'm also in touch with some people in Suffolk, trying to find the family.

I still haven't given up hope of finding a picture of Col Coke with the car in the background!

Hi Alan

From the 1902 Army List, it has Coke in Dublin. So you should keep your eye open for the Irish Government putting the 1901 and 1911 Census online. They have already done the 1911 for Dublin, and are due to complete both years by sometime next year.

Back to the 1902 Army List. He is a 2nd Lt with the ASC, attached (on probation) as a Lt with the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. It lists effective dates of 1 May 1901 and 1 Aug 1900. You may be able to find something around those dates on the London Gazette. His name is written J D’E Fitz-E Coke.
