Hi again Di

"I have found my grandad's family on the 1881 census, but my grandad wasn't born until 1887.
John Nation-Head- North Petherton Somerset
Mary (Jane) Nation - wife North Petherton Somerset
Edward Nation son

My grandad was Charles Nation b 1887 NorthPetherton Somerset"

RG12/ 1881/ Folio 74/ Page 16 – West Newton, North Petherton, Somerset.
NATION  John, Head, Marr, 35, ? Shepherd, West Monkton, Somerset
Jane, Wife, Marr, 32, Clayhydon, Devon.
Edward, Son, Unm, 14, ??, North Neverton
William, Son, Unm, 12, ??, North Netherton
George, Son, Unm, 10, Scholar, North Netherton
Hally, Son, Unm, 8, Scholar, North Netherton
Charles, Son, Unm, 4, Scholar, North Netherton, Somerset
Elizabeth J, Dau, Unm, 1, North Netherton
POOLE Jane, Wifes Mother, Widow, 56, ???, born Clayhydon, Devon

Both Edward & William are employed, but cant make out their job as writing is so faint.
The added bonus of the Wifes Mother is spoilt because again, I can not make out her Occupation (it looks like Laundress)

How about that then

Wow Chris, never expected such a quick result!!!  ;) many thanks xxx
Your results have added an extra branch to my tree as though I have been lucky enough to go back to 1650 through father to son, my Grandad's mother has always been a mystery.  In all the Parish records for her wedding and the children's baptism, the entry has always been....Mary Jane Salter (no father), so to find her mother with the surname POOLE is a real bonus, I can now check my 1881 census to find earlier details.

Once again, many thanks, and if I can ever return the favour, let me know   :D

Di xx

Hi there

Glad to be of help to you Di

The occupation for 35 year old John Nation was ..... Shepherd, could not make out the first part; but it did look a bit like Agricultural - but that does not really make sense!!

Maybe later or earlier census details will help clarify for you

Hi Chris, just to let you know what I have managed to discover, thanks to your help, about my great grandmother MARY JANE SALTER.  Up until I posted my message, I knew nothing at all about her, no parents, siblings etc, she was a complete mystery.  After I received your 1891 census look-up, I discover that her mother was a widow, living with Mary Jane in 1891, but was suprised to find that her surname was POOLE and not SALTER as expected.  by searching the BMD and various census's I now know that JANE SALTER married RUSCOMBE POOLE in 1868, when MARY JANE was 9 years old and were together for 21 years until his death in 1889.  I am not yet sure if JANE POOLE was married before, and whether SALTER was her maiden name or the surname of MARY JANE's father, but I am awaiting MARY JANE'S birth certificate, and that should hopefully fill in the gaps.
Just to let you know that a little help from others can make an enormous difference
Thanks again
Di xxx

Di

Hey, thats great, I am very pleased for you.

We dont very often hear about the success that researches like yourself have - its usually the other way round (moans and groans)

But thats what this forum is all about - experienced researchers helping out other researchers.

Spread the word Di - we are a good and helpful lot on here!!
