You know I think the spelling of the surname is the problem. And that's why we can't find him. I have also looked on Scotlandspeople from 1841 through to 1871. And I have looked on English census from 1841 to 1871. Nothing !!!  He has to be somewhere. He only turns up at his wedding in 1869. Not on 1871 census, but I can find him on English census for 1881, 1891 and 1901. All different spellings !

I have tried all the spellings I can think of, but must missing the correct one !!

I am stumped as to what to try next.

Thanks again,

Red   :(

Gadget, can you answer this one !!

Was Knockbain in Inverness in 1838, and then changed borders, to Ross and Cromarty, sometime before 1861?

Hi Red

I've had computer probs so have only been coming on for very short spells and not looking at much at at all. I'm fixed now  :)

Could you give me the  1891 Census reference and I'll have a look.

There aren't any other Inverness places in the UK though.

Hello Red

Have you tried with the spelling "McLeman".
which is my ancestors' name but was misspelled as McLennan many times.

My McLemans come from Avoch, Ross & Cromarty, but my gg- grandfather moved from there to Petty, Invernesshire in the early 1800's.  You might try looking for McLeman, that is, if you haven't already.

Hi Gadget

sorry about the delay in answering, but the gremlins have been at my puter too!

The reason I asked about Knockbain, was someone found a John McLennan, with John as the father in Ross and Cromarty, on the 1861 census. I thought if the boarders where close, then maybe they could have moved between the time he was born c1833/1838, till the 1861 census. The ref I was given was 073/00 0002. I don't know if this is him, even if the boarders have changed. Since Ancestry brought out 1851 and 1861 Scottish census, the possibilities have grown, but I'm no nearer finding the right one !!!

Thanks again,

Hi Torrygirl,

thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. I must admit, that is an unusual spelling, and it hadn't occured to me to try it. I will now, and I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again,

EUREKA   !!!!!!!

I have found them on the english 1871 census.  ;D

No wonder I couldn't find them. They are under the surname of Mc Queen  !!!!!!!     ::)

It has been very badly transcribed to say the least.  :(

I put John Mc in, and went through every page. I found the son first. John b 1870 Liverpool. It says John Senior was born in Mardness, where ever that is, but if you look closely, you can see it's Inverness !!!

Hey Ho,

Now to find him on the Scottish census   lol.

Thanks again for your help.
