SMITH & HAWKINS - Baldock area
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 09:26 BST (UK) »
My maternal gt grandmother was **Ellen SMITH, bn 11 April 1847; m. Charles SCALES 24 Sep 1874 in Stevenage.
Both died and are buried in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

My gt gt grandparents were:  James SCALES & Elizabeth DILLEY and John SMITH & Harriet HAWKINS

I am particularly interested in John SMITH & Harriet HAWKINS, as I know hardly anything about them, apart from their names taken from birth and marriage certificates.

I do know they married 29 June 1839 at Little Wymondley Parish Church, and Harriet's father was William HAWKINS.
John SMITH's father was also a John, occupation farmer.  John [jun]'s occupation was that of sawyer.

John & Harriet had at least 7 children - Mary, Frederic, Ellen**, Arthur, George, John & Annie - thanks to the Census records on Ancestry.co.uk!
As with the rest of my mother's SCALES family, the SMITHs & HAWKINs families appear to have stayed around Baldock, Great Wymondley & Little Wymondley, with occasional forays into Stevenage :)

Anyone else connect with these families?

Hi Ann,

The parish record for the marriage of John and Harriet on 29Jun1839 confirms the details you have quoted with the additional information that Harriet was of Hitchin at the time and the marriage was witnessed by Joseph Smith and Maria Howard.

The 1851 census records Harriet's birthplace as Ippollitts and the IGI records her baptism as 26Jan1817 her parents being William and Mary.  It also records  the baptism of a further child for the couple at Ippollitts - 30Aug1819 Mary  Hawkins.  Unfortunately the child died on 09Jan1820.

The Hertfordshire Burial Index records the burial of Mary Hawkins, age 39, at Ippollittts on 30Aug1819.  This coincides with the birth of baby Mary.

Hope this provides a bit of background for you.

Regards   ...   Peter
