Hello Poli
To cause a little more puzzlement.
There is a Llangwm in Monmouthshire as well as Pembroke and Denbigh

Thanks very much for that cheerful news Rhys, 2 Llangwms is more than enough.!! ::)
I know feel i have to really double check that i've got the correct Llangwm for g.grandfather's birthplace. All these Welsh names are difficult to contend with without them being in triplicate------- Poli.

Hi Poli

I've checked and there only seems to be these three. It's not surprising that they are tripplicates though, since Llan means village or settlement around the Church (often thought of as just 'church' - which is eglwys) and gwm is the mutated form of cwm - a corrie or bowl shaped piece of land carved out by (usually) glaciation or weathering of some kind.

Thankyou Gadget for the interesting explanation of the place name Llangwm. When i'm searching down long lists on the census sheets these Welsh place name mesmerise me!! and trying to pronounce some of them is well nigh impossible. When my upcoming trip to N.Wales takes place later in the year  i expect to have an embarrassing time trying to get my tongue round some of them ::) ::) Poli.

Poli

Welsh is phonetic - just that we often take two letters to make one - hence LL is one letter - like a cross between th and l, and ch is one letter - the gutteral ccccchhhh and ng, rh and ff  and .............. the mutations  ;)

Oh you'll enjoy - just say diolch, bore da, nos da and cymru am byth

Hello Poli

Try checking out this site, I find it quite interesting to go to once in awhile.
I wish I had known about it before we went to Wales, it may have cut down on red-faced moments. :-[ :-[
