Parish Record Look up - Shelley in Brighton
« on: Tuesday 01 August 06 10:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Just wondering if someone could look up the following baptism for me:

William Shelley/Shelly c 1798 Brighton, Sussex. Details of parents would be lovely.

Thanks, Kathox

Hi Kathox,

I have found one possible:

William Shelly, born 21 Apr 1797, baptised 2 May 1797, St Nicholas, Brighton, parents John and Anne Shelly

John Shelley bachelor married Ann Weller spinster by banns 19 Jun 1796, Brighton.  Both otp.

Thanks so much!
I live in Australia and will need to do more research further back than William in Brighton. Is it possible to buy the Parish records for Brighton? It will definately save asking for people to do lookups all the time.

If not, could I ask: would it be possible to ask if there were any other siblings? Then I can use the census to trace further down those lines.
Thanks Again

Hi Kathox,

William appears to be the eldest.

Others listed with the same possible parents are:

Mary (mother recorded as Nancy but still possible) b 4 Mar bapt 8 Mar 1799
John b 24 Mar, bapt 28 May 1801
Ann b 6 Mar bapt 24 Apr 1803
Elizabeth bapt 10 Apr 1805
Maria bapt 5 May 1807
Maria b 20 Apr 1807 bapt 21 Oct 1808
James bapt 21 Sep 1810
Charles bapt 3 Sept 1812 (twin)
George bapt 3 Sep 1812 (twin)

I am a bit puzzled by the two Marias and wondered if there was a second family, but I can't see another likely marriage.  The only other one is in West Sussex and she is recorded as Hannah.  (This is in 1798.)  Otherwise, it looks like just one family - about two years between each child.

If you can get to an LDS Family History Centre, you can order the film of the parish records for a small fee and view it at the centre.  This might give you further clues.

Nell

PS We don't mind looking things up for people ;)

Thanks Nell,
I will work with this for a while, but I will be back to ask for more once I have exhausted this info. I do still feel a little guilty making someone else do my work for me though.
The LDS centre is still a bit daunting for me just now though. I'm going to have a look next week to see how it all works.
Are there many Shelley's in Brighton around this time? Would it take me hours to copy all the info down?

As far as I can make out at least 100 baptisms between late 18th century and late 19th.  That's just for those parishes I can access - there were others later in the 19th century.

You could extract the ones on the IGI via the batch numbers for Brighton - see this site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountySussex.htm#B

Type in Shelley once you have selected which batch to search and click search.

Have fun!

Thanks Nell,

Can I ask for a few more PR details? I'm sorry there is so many but these will give me alot to run with so I will just put them all together and get it over and done with.  Then I can start looking for my Shelly's with the LDS resources. Yay!

William Shelley m Elizabeth Myers in St Nicholas Brighton 1829

William Wallace Shelley c1829 baptism Brighton (father William shelley)

If there are any births for a Catherine (Kitty) Nye in Brighton c1798. I have one in cuckfield but need to make sure it is actually her.

Any burials for a John and Ann Shelly as children in Brighton between 1824 and 1835.

Marriage of John Nye and a Catherine in Cuckfield or nearby c1798

Death of John Nye in Cuckfield or Brighton between 1812 and 1841.

Thanks so much,
Kathox

Ok - let's start with the marriages first, from the point of view of my resources, those are easiest.

William Shelley widower age 20 + of Brighton m Elizabeth Julia Myers spinster age 21 of Brighton 21 Oct 1829 by licence.  The licence was issued in the Arcdeaconry of Lewes on 20th Oct 1829

John Nye bachelor, shoemaker, m Katherine (Kitty) Roebuck (Robuck) spinster by banns 13 Jul 1797 Cuckfield.  Both otp.

Two interesting entries considering your request:

William Shelley bach m Katherine Nye spinster by banns 18 Sep 1817 Brighton, both otp

William Shelly, widower of Brighton, (signs Shelley) m Elizabeth Bartholomew spinster by banns Twickenham Montpelier Chapel, Middlesex, 18 Mar 1828
Witnesses Richd Perch, Catherine Haydon, Jn Blackwell

William Wallace Shelley baptised 12 Mar 1830, Brighton, parents William and Elizabeth.
Siblings:
Kitty Harriet bapt 28 Aug 1831
Clara or Clair bapt 30 Sep 1832

William and Katherine had four children baptised in Brighton 1820 - 1826.  Let me know if you are interested.

There does not appear to be a baptism for a Catherine/Katherine/Kitty Nye around 1798 in Brighton.

Burials are potentially the most difficult - it depends if the area is covered.

Nothing for a John Nye in Cuckfield or Brighton, but some in Henfield.

The only burials I can see in Brighton for children (aged 10 and under) named Shelley are these:

Edwin Shelley aged 3 14 Dec 1826
Elizabeth Eliza Shelley aged 2 15 Mar 1827
William Shelley aged 8 21 July 1828
Maria Shelley aged 10 26 Jan 1830

But please note I only have access to a brief period of records - there could easily be some before this date.

Thanks Nell

I would love those PR's for William and Catherine Shelley's children please, if you don't mind.

Could you also please check to see if there are any more children for John and Catherine Nye other than the following: Catherine c1798, William c1799, George c1803, James c1805, Issac c1808 and Charles c1812. All christened in Cuckfield. I found some but am not sure if I got them all.

Thank you again,
Kathok
