Cornwall to Australia - Richard STEVENS COMPLETED & THANKS
« on: Wednesday 02 August 06 01:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all, Will SKS help me to find information about when Richard Stevens came to Australia. He was born in St Just, Cornwall, circa 1859, to parents John and Ann nee Harry.
I think I have found his family on the 1861 Census, as follows:
STEVENS, John, head, age 37, tin and copper miner, born St Just
wife Ann, 36, born Morvah
Children:Mary 11; John 6; Matthew 7; William 5; Grace 3; RICHARD 2,born Morvah (which I think is close to St Just).
I can't find the family on any census after this one. Richard was married at Sandhurst, Victoria (Bendigo) on 20 July 1882 to Angelina Murton. His marriage certificate states he was a miner, and with his father being a tin miner, perhaps the family went to South Australia first.
I would appreciate any help given.
Regards, Irene

Ozchook,
Just a thought - do you have Richard's death certificate - I have found with mine that they sometimes list how long they have been in the Colony. So if Richard came into South Australia  first then into Victoria it may say how long he lived in each State.
Richard Stevens died 1921 Eaglehawk Reg No. 1381.
Parents John Stevens & Ann Harry.

hello there again irene

i have also found
MATTHEW STEVENS died 1918  aged 65  at EHawk regno 12632
parents john stevens and Eliz HARRY

This is the same death place as Richard  and the dates do make him a possibility for being brother to richard even though the mothers name is not quite the same

I have looked on the south australia index  but on theirs for deaths they do not show parents names  and on marriages it is just the fathers  so not much help  from me

regards jenn

Thank you all very much for your input. Sarra, I did download an image of Richard's death certificate and it stated he had been in Victoria for 45 years, and as he died in 1921, that makes the year 1876 that he arrived there; no mention of being in South Australia before that. I checked the freeCEN for 1871 and still couldn't find the family in Cornwall, or anywhere else. Perhaps the family or Richard did go to SA first, but the informant didn't bother giving the correct info when Richard died. Who would bother at such a time?
I checked prov site for Assisted and Unassisted passengers to Victoria, but no luck, and the Assisted list doesn't go up as far as 1876 - yet.
tropicalj, you WERE helpful. If I lash out again and get Matthew's death (1918)certificate (god, it gets costly, doesn't it?), there may be differing info as to how long he'd been in in Oz. If he's Richard's brother (and the age fits) that will give another clue hopefully.
OzyBob, You have the first three (of 6) of Richard and Angelina's children listed, and I can remember the good old days when all the oldies were alive back in the late 60s. Florence and Fanny I remember well. One of their sisters, Ruby, was my mother in law's mother. Dammit, and we all say it, why wasn't I interested in Genie stuff back then? I could have quizzed Ruby. Thank you for all the info. The people you mentioned could be siblings of Richard's. Unfortunately STEVENS is such a common Cornish name, so I will keep all that you posted, for future reference.
There are probably more responses to your replies but for now I'm getting out as I was 20 seconds away from getting timed out. For now, thank you all again.
Regards, Irene

Ozchook,
I have them on the 1871 census. RG10/2343. Civil parish of St.Just Village or Hamlet - Boscaswell -  ...??
But their parents are not listed with them.
John Stevens head unmarried age 18 birth place Morvah Occ Tin Miner.
Mary.  A. Stevens sister unm 22 housekeeper.
Matthew brother unm 17 tin miner.
William brother 13 unm. tin miner.
Richard    "         13   "      "     "
Elizabeth sister 11 . all born Morvah.
Did John and Ann Stevens migrated with their children or did they go before them -or were they both deceased.

Hi Irene!

At last I can offer some information from my resources!!!

Matthew Stevens, son of John Stevens and Elizabeth Harry, was living in Eaglehawk in 1879.

He was a gold miner/mine manager.

I have information about his spouse and children, as well as some other details that I could forward you in a personal message, if you'd like.

Cheers

Elsie

Oh Elsie!!!
I was just getting really into this one when you have 'gone private' and spoilt the fun for us.
If they are no onger living, are you able to share your info with the group and not just the PM system?
No undue pressure intended!!!
We understand there are sometimes reasons.
Sue
PS Irene, There are lots of your Stevens buried at Eaglehawk and surrounding cemetries, including Angeline and Richard.
