I think that would be 'matelot' but pronounced matlow.

Having enhanced enlarged contrasted etc the word looks like

MALADIES

I dont know whether illness was an occupation or if the enumerator just added it as a comment.

I think it is a misspelled MALTSTER (malster).   Did he live near a brewery?

I'm not sure if there was a brewery nearby, 'old maps . com' is down for maintenance so I can't check.  I'll have a look when its back up.

They lived in Grafton Street Liverpool.

They lived about 5 yds or so from a brewery so this must be it. :)

Spotty - you don't say what year this was - What was John Unsworths occupation in the nearest census it might help you to confirm,  looks like a bad spelling of Maltster to me too  :)
