what does this mean?
« on: Saturday 05 August 06 20:09 BST (UK) »
I have just got details from the 1891 census about my ancestors. It states their occupation as Coal Miner and underneath it says in brackets (Em'ee). What does Em'ee mean please? Also it says on another Coal Miner & Lic. Vict. What does Lic. Vict mean?
Hellpppppp!

Hi
Don't know about the Em'ee but Lic Vict probably means Licensed Victualler.(publican)

Could 'em'ee' be 'employee' as opposed to 'employer'?
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"
