Hi Dave and Renee.
The 1900 census shows the eldest child as Rodger born 1885 IL. It also states that they had been married for 17 years. Look for a marriage around 1883.
The census also gives Williams dob as August 1861

You guys rock! Big time!  Much appreciated for everything!  The picture is also wonderful!!

I've been digging more into this... on the back of the photo it says... "Williams Family"  but there is an "F" written in smaller print next to the Williams.

On my grandmother's marriage information it states that her witnesses were Virginia Kiefer (my granpa's sister) and "Fred H. Williams, Jr".

I'm wondering now if Fred Williams was then the father of all these kids (including Essie - my gran's mother) instead of William J.

Just diving more into it now to see what I come up with for Fred H.  Could be a big coincidence about the names of the kids.  The names are so alike for all these families...

Admittedly, I'm a little obsessed, but I'm CONVINCED now that William (J) Williams is Essie's dad!

I traced James back to Illinois, since the 1910 census said he was born there and the rest of the kids in Maryland.  On the 1900 census, William is listed as "Williams Williams"  born AUG 1861 and lists OTHER children:  Rodger, Eastie, Ruby, Willie, Irene and James.  On the back of the photo is listed (amongst others) Dod (Rodger?), Eastie and Ruby.  This HAS to be the one.

Now to find William Williams born in Aug 1861 in Wales!

Kali - still like the photo :)

edited to add:  "Rene" - holding Essie in the photo, must be Irene :)

arg! I am so stuck, trying to find WJ Williams birthplace!

I'm too much of a novice to go further into it.  I went so far as to figure out soundex codes etc., but I just don't know where to go...

I guess those with lots of experience know exactly what I'm going through!  :D
