I would be very grateful if someone could look up the following family in the unfilmed Chorlton-on-Medlock 1851 census?

William Wild, b. circa 1824 at Manchester
+Eleanor Coulton, b. 1822 at Prescot , m. between Dec 1850 at Manchester
who I can't find in the 1851 census.

The couple were in the 1861 census at 6 Cranworth Street, Chorlton upon Medlock. William was an Iron Moulder.

(Sandra C has already confirmed they are not in Salford Regent Road, Salford Greengate, Pendleton & Pendlebury, London Road, St George', Deansgate, Ardwick, Hulme)

Thank you for any help
john

You don't have to go to unfilmed censuses - they are there on the filmed

1851 census HO107 2228 folio 488
13 Nelson Street Manchester  Lancashire
William Wyld Eleanor 26  Manchester Head  Married Moulder
Eleanor Wyld  29  Prescott, Lancashire,  Wife Married At home

Hi Valda

Thank you very much. Not a spelling I would have expected for Wyld.

regards
john

Which goes to show the need for flexibility when searching, since both the people concerned and the census enumerator could spell in some quite unexpected ways - spelling was not as yet standardised. Therefore better to do a search on the census index for something like

First name search only

Ele*

with birthplace
Prescot*

and age
1822 (within 5 years)

and see what you get - only three candidates, so Eleanor Wyld stood out. Asterisks are a necessity in electronic index searching (they don't close down your options) - plus they have the added bonus in saving time in typing.

Hi Valda,
Well done for finding John's lookup for William & Eleanor
I am a bit confused (nothing unusual there!)

I have looked again on the Unfilmed Chorlton on Medlock, I still can't find William & Eleanor Wild or Wyld or Wildes, also Nelson St is there, but number 13 is missing from the transcript.

All I can suggest is that the records deteriorated even more between the filmed and unfilmed versions.

You have put the TNA number down as HO107/2228 this I understood was for London Rd. but I will bow to your better judgement

I have looked on London Rd still no joy

Anyway John is happy that's all that matters

Kind Regards
Dave
