Orphanages
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 17:39 BST (UK) »
My ggg grandfather was born in Tynehead just below the Scotish Border, we have found his birth certificate minus any parental details, therfore I am assuming that he was Orphaned or abandoned as a baby in 1758.
Where would I find the relevant information on orphanages at that time? it's possible that he went to an orphanage in Either Cumberland/Northumberland/Roxburhshire/dumfries.

Regards John

Have you got the year correct?

Hi John,

for general information about orphanges, try the Rossbret Institutions Website at
http://www.institutions.org.uk/index.html

click on orphanages, and work your way through the counties you mentioned.

HTH,
Bob

OK.  The reason I asked is because I have never heard of a Birth Certificate before 1837, when registration of Birth, Marriages and deaths was introduced.  I was under the impression that before that, there were only church records of baptisms, marriages and burials.

Do you actually have a piece of paper recording this unparented birth/baptism or have you found something on the Internet indicating the birth or baptism of this person in 1758?

It's interesting (or coincidental) that the "Orphanage Movement" is deemed to have started in England in 1758 ... http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11322b.htm ... I would have thought it would be some years after that date before there were many formal institutions to look after orphaned children and would imagine that any orphanages which sprung up in the 18th century would be confined to the larger towns or cities.  But I'm speculating.

To avoid duplication of effort, I'm providing a link to your thread "in another place"

John Greenbowler,

Where exactly is Tynehead "just below the Scottish border" ?

And for birth, do you mean Baptism certificate, rather than a civil birth certificate (started England and Wales in July 1837)

According to www.streetmap.co.uk there appears to be a Tynehead a few miles SE of Edinburgh.  There's also a Tynehead Fell south of Alston, but this appears to be an uninhabited area.

Thank you Geoff,
I will contact my sister who said that she had found the birth cert without any parentage, I didn't realise that they didn't come into effect that early.

"Tynehead", Geoff Cumberland or Northumberland or even Roxburghshire what do you think?

I'll try Carlisle first....

The Tynehead we are familiar with in this instance is just above Kielder in the Borders, where the river Tyne originates. Most of it is now under water of course.
