Hello John,

I'm inclined to agree with Geoff E about formal institutions. I feel that around 1758 orphans might have been taken in by godparents, a philanthropic member of the parish in which they lived or relatives. The care of orphans wouldn't have been as formal as it was at a later date.

Would the Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Centre have any information about orphanages at Tynehead? Their address is: Library HQ, St Mary's Mill, Selkirk. TD7 5EW

By the way have you clarified the information you have with your sister?

Hi John

Have you tried the IGI/Family search website yet?  Maybe his baptism is on there, which could give you the area, and maybe parent/s your ggg grandfathr.

Do you have his name, and I could have a look for you?
