how do i find out about a persons job

Tracing family tree i have discovered they were living and working mostly in liverpool. The husband worked as an emigration agent in liverpool. Will i be able to find out where he worked from or if he worked for someone or a company?

My first stop would be trade directories - a few covering Liverpool are searchable at www.historicaldirectories.org - I've found all sorts there!

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

You didn't mention the years concerned, but if he was in the census returns sometimes it may give more information there.
