What Unit RAMC
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 23:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone interperet what unit is shown on the following. It appears on an identity certificate that my grandfather had when demobilised at the end of WW1. As can be seen he was in the RAMC.

Here's the whole certificate. It doesn't really help much. When he volunteered right at the start of the war his call up paper had Oxfordshire Light Infantry written on the top, although he lived Edmonton and reported to Horse Guards Parade. When he got there they were divided up by numbers and he was put into the RAMC.

I thought that the unit may show who he was attached to. Yes it does look like No 7 then something beginning with C so could be company. Not sure what that would mean though. His medal card just shows RAMC

His medal index card has nothing extra on it, just his number, RAMC and the 3 normal medals. He entered France in 31/7/15. I only talked to him once about his time in the war (when he was 102 I think it was) and of course wasn't as interested then as I am now. He mentioned he was at the Somme, Ypres and Paschendale. His medals are engraved with his name, his regimental number and RAMC.  He didn't mention the Croix de Guerre which I have now found with his other medals!

Hi
If you can post his MIC i can then tell you the files you would need at the National Archives to get his unit in the RAMC. And here is the RAMC E-mail:
museum@keogh72.freeserve.co.uk ask them about his Croix de Guerre

Hi Themonsstar

Here's his medal card, and thanks for the email I'll get on to them. Looked on the London Gazette for the C de G but although some names are shown,  there are not that many mentioned.

Hi
Here are the file numbers for the National Archives:
RAMC-101-B2=WO329/2071 this is for the BWM & VM.
RAMC-C2? 139(i say 139 is the page No) so it could be WO329/2917, the pages cover 1c-176c your No is 139. This is for the Star 1915. The 1915 Star Medal Roll may have his RAMC unit on the page Cheers.
