My Firewall is driving me mad
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 23:43 BST (UK) »
Last week after taking a break for a cuppa,i found i must have been disconnected, because i couldn't move to the next page, but the monitor icon showed i was. When i tried connecting i got unable to make connection. I tried allsorts to no avail, thinking it might be a I.P problem i left it till the next day. It was still unable to connect,I then remembered this had happened before ,so checked the connection and yes it had been locked by my firewall. So i turned it off, then back on next day.Three days later my emails wouldn't go.Same problem, how do i stop my connection being firewalled and why does it do this ???. It's permanently off now.

Do you have call waiting or an answer machine on your phone line??

Back in the old days when I was on dialup, everytime someone called me and left a message, my connection would break off.

I've had cable for the last 5 years now. :)

Bet it's Zone Alarm

more likely Norton ....... I've used Zonealarm Pro for a number of years now and never had any problems until the last update but those gremlins have now been fixed with another update.
ZA (free) either works perfectly or doesn't work at all (my experience) but it rarely blocks programs on an ad hoc basis as described by Celia.

Hi Folks

Burrow Digger I only have a Phone Line

Falkyrn. Didn't know it had a name ;D it came with the computer Windows XP Professional

This firewall  normally isn't a problem except that every now and then it gets fads and locks my beeb connection. So i just have to switch it off. I never ever download anything from the net. I once downloaded an update from Microsoft, never again it messed my computer up. What i cant understand is why the firwall does this

If it's windows own firewall then both of our guesses were wide of the mark.  ;D

Its difficult to understand your particular problem as the Windows Firewall does not stop outward bound traffic but concentrates on anything coming in to you.
But it is possible that minor changes have caused the programs used to have had their identity changed as far as the firewall is concerned.
To make exceptions of these programs go to
Control Panel
security Center
Manage Security Settings for windows Firewall
click on exceptions
Check that your Internet Browser (Internet Explorer if that is what you use) is ticked
if not and it is listed click on it to add the "tick"
If not listed then click on "add program" and find it in the list presented click on OK
repeat this for your email program

Technically - EVERY webpage you look at online is being downloaded to your hard drive - it goes into the Temporary Files cache.  This includes anything you read here at Rootschat. :)

On the exceptions page there are 4 Box's

File and Print Sharing  Not ticked
Remote Assistance       ticked
Remote Desktop          not ticked
UPnP Framework         Ticked

My computer connects  via to remote assistance.

No Mention of I.E. On the advanced widow's is enabled for the Beeb. I have looked at these before and as said the firewall should not lock me out so i cant connect.  Shall i risk restoring Firewalls defaults in case something tweeny has changed. I don't want mess around with setting really
