help with odd place name
« on: Monday 07 August 06 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone can help me with what I think is a misspelling of a place of birth for Pembrokeshire. On one of the censuses my ancestors place of birth is given as 'St Tiecle, Pembrokeshire'. I cannot find a place of this name on any map. In another census the same relative's place of birth is 'Tenby'.
Can any one suggest what the correct name of this place 'St Tiecle' could be??! I thought it could possibly be St Issells?I am not very familiar with Pembs even though I live in Wales so am not too sure of pronunciation of various place names. I have my work cut out as the surname is Jones!!!!
Many Thanks
Mrs Food

Why don't you write to the

Tenby Observer Newspaper
Warren Street
Tenby

and ask them to put an inquiry in the paper when it comes out.

Hi Mrs Food

Have you seen the original census sheet, or are you relying on someone else's transcription?

Can you give us a reference and the relative's name, please?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thank you all very much for your suggestions.
Lambkin, thanks, I had not come across St Teilo's Tenby, I will look into that.

Arranroots - It is the 1871 census Gelligaer - Glamorgan - district 4 page 44, Mary Francis(5th person from top of sheet) wife of John Francis.
I've spent hours trying to decipher the original writing, the transcript has it as 'St Tiecle'. I suppose if you pronounce it with a soft 'c' it could be St Issells or St Ishmaels, but if a hard 'c' it would sound more like St Tickle!! Have a look at it and see what you think!

Many thanks all
Best wishes

They are a problematic family, aren't they?

I had a look while researching Mary's hubby's birthplace and it certainly looks just as you have transcribed it.  Quite what was passing through the enumerator's mind...

I have requested some further details of marriages on your other thread - easier to keep them in the one place - we must try to remember to update this one if we find anything significatn!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Yes!

I was trying to imagine the scene on the doorstep on census night - my John & Mary would probably have had very broad Welsh accents which would perhaps have taken a bit of deciphering by the Valleys boy enumerator! I have spent many an hour muttering away at my computer with a map of Wales on my lap, saying various things in various Welsh accents!!!
If I solve this one I will definitely post it here!

All the best
