Family grave Whittle-le-Woods
« on: Monday 07 August 06 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for a family grave. My great aunt said there was a family grave in Whittle-le-woods, Lancashire. Apparently when her father died his brother came and took him there to be buried.
The family were catholics. Does anybody know the name of a catholic church there and if it has a graveyard. Are there any records anywhere?

The family name is TYRER and probably buried there would be Joseph C TYRER, Benedict TYRER, RICHARD TYRER, HARRIET TYRER and possibly a Peter.

I'd be grateful for ay help,

Matt

Hi,

The church will be St. Chad, South Hill, Whittle le Woods.  The church was Roman Catholic and it does have a graveyard.  The records will probably be a Lancashire Records Office, but it may be worth trying Chorley Central Library as
they could have microfilm/fiche copies.

Regards,
Mo

Certainly!! If you get there before I do, can you look for a Slater grave?!!!
If we're there at the same time, I'll be the red headed woman wandering about looking confused and slightly hysterical... ;)

I'm not too far from Whittle. Not sure when, but I'll look for you both before too long - Tyrer, Slater and, from name list I assume Brown??
Will post here any discoveries in next couple of weeks, any more details to look for, please post.

How lovely of you to offer!! Thanks so much.

I'm looking for Slaters John, Margaret, Letitia, another John and a Sarah. All between 1850 and 1910.

The Browns weren't Catholic so wouldn't be in St Chads. I'm not sure where they would be, I don't know nough about them only that they were Methodists. I'm thinking they would be in a municipal cemetery?

Anyway, Many thanks for offering! Don't go to too much trouble, and if you need anything from Manchester library I will return the favour! Pippa x

St. Chad's graveyard isn't very big, a contrast of very old graves, some very worn and unreadable, some fallen stones and other, very recent stones. I'm afraid I didn't find very much - the only Slater graves (2) too recent but I refer to them in case any ancestors "ring bells" to these dates and names :-
Anastasia and Harold Slater (no dates or agea given)
also their son Harold died 12th Sep 2000 aged 63 years.
Another grave close by includes Elizabeth Helen Slater died 15th March 1937 age 70 years. She is with - Proctor; Coupe; and Hilton but no relationship is referred to.
Sorry Pippa but that's all for you.

Slightly more luck (I hope) with Tyrer but only 2 graves located :-
Richard Tyrer died March 13th 1900 aged 64yrs. Mary, wife of the above, died Oct 1st 1918 aged 80yrs.
Catherine, daughter of the above died March 8th 1934 aged 71yrs.
also Richard, son of the above, died March 30th 1938 aged 70 yrs
Small headstone further along:-
Esther Tyrer died July 15th 1949 aged 76yrs
James her husband died Sep 4th 1950 aged 80yrs.
The latter two are probably too recent but thought I should include them.
Sorry folks but this is all I could find
