KERR--Can anyone read this?
« on: Tuesday 08 August 06 17:36 BST (UK) »
This is from the birth certificate of John Bell KERR born 1859 in Halifax to William KERR and Ann Mary Somebody. I think it's Morler...the second and third letters are like the ones in "formerly", and there's a tail on the last letter that cuts across the y in formerly. I can't find a marriage, and I can't find a suitable Ann Mary Morler in the 1851 (William was single in 1851), or Marler. Does anyone have a better idea?

Definitely agree: Morley.

Clearly begins :  "Morle"  (not Ma...)

The y - in all 3 words:   - the left side  of the  "u" part (which can look very "v"-like) is considerably lower than the right side which rises quite high then lowers and continues to become the straight-down, no-loop tail. The  Y tails  - indeed all downward strokes where the stoke is final or is not part of a following upswing (as in the K)  - are all  written with some pressure while  the nib  it sees to me, is being pushed flat down.

I think in this case the tail of the Y ( in formerly) has been:
1) crossed slightly by the high right side rise-fall of the surname Y.
2) the first Y tail has  'blended' into the tail of the second,  creating visually what looks like one large tail shared by both words. But you will see where the is a slight "waist" in the stroke,  where all 3 points meet - the riser, the bottom of tail 1 and the top of tail 2.

Certainly don't think the surname ends with an "r". Though this clerk does write his r's in 2 diff styles, he finished the final R in Kerr with a backward loop flourish - not a  flick up and off to the right.

Cheers

Okay, now I see it. In fact the last Y looks just like the Y in Mary.

I'm sold :)

In fact, I'm so sold that I think I just found her in the 1851. Ann Maria Morley, age 26, unmarried, living as an assistant in the household of Thomas Pearson, linen draper & silk mercer. Ann is a milliner.

William Kerr was a travelling draper. Living in Upper Brunswick St, maybe about 500 yds from the Pearson residence.

But I still can't find a marriage. Would a milliner live in sin?   :o
