Advice from a techie needed
« on: Tuesday 08 August 06 21:56 BST (UK) »
A little while ago I had one of those accidents with my laptop which resulted in the loss of most of my fonts.  No idea how.  Anyway, I've had fun downloading new ones.  One problem remains.  Something happened to Arial, which is the font used by several programmes such as Legacy.  It's still there, but a bit corrupted.  So questions: 1) Can I risk deleting Arial and reinstalling it, or would that cause more mayhem?  2) Can I change the default font the PC uses?  I don't have MS Office although I have Windows XP.  I use Openoffice, and can set the default in that.

The default fonts can be found in Conntrol Panel/Appearance/Display. That should fix it. If not come back to us.

Hi

Why not do a system restore, to a date before your accident.

Well - I tried the Display thing before, and have looked again, but no option to change the fonts, only the size.  And my system restore is another thing that's gone - though it never worked when I had it, always telling me it couldn't do it.  Guess I need a new laptop, but can't afford it. :-\

To install a font go to the fonts folder within the windows folder select file from the menu and "install new font"

To alter the system font requires changes in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
DO NOT  ATTEMPT THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
screwing up the registry is the easiest way of giving an XP computer a lobotomy.

The easiest way to sort it out is by reinstalling windows on top of your current set up but this only works if you have a full XP CD - a recovery disk from most manufacturers will simply wipe out everything and restore windows to the factory settings .... a ling laborious recovery.

Thanks all.  Falkryn, your red sentence is the key.  I'm going to leave it alone and live with what I've got.  ;)

There is an easy way for some form of replacement without going into the registry

Right click on the desktop
select properties
select appearance
select advanced
select the parts of windows you want to adjust the font for
click on OK
repeat for the different parts
