Derbyhaven - Harbour Masters
« on: Wednesday 09 August 06 18:01 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to obtain a list of names and dates of Derbyhaven harbour masters.

A Thomas Sansbury was harbour master sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's.

Thanks

Dave

Hiya Dave,

You'll need to find someone to have a look through IOM directories. I've found a few but as far as I'm aware they are not all online.

Castletown Directory (including Derbyhaven and Ballasalla)
[From Thwaites' Directory, 1863] Clague Robert, harbour master and light keeper, Derbyhaven

[from Brown's Directory, 1882] Clague, Robert, harbour master, Derbyhaven

Harbourmasters [From Brown's Directory, 1894] Derbyhaven — Thomas Sansbury (£120).

Hiya Dave,

I've had a thought :D It might well be a wild one but it might lead somewhere. There's a United Kingdom Harbour Masters Association which may be able to assist. Their website gives very little information but I'm sure there must have been a similar Association in the late 1800s or early 1900s. If you contact them keep us in the picture as other members may be looking for Harbour Master ancestors.

There's also an International Harbour Masters' Association which is based in the UK.

www.manxnotebook.com has listof all known directories + has most of each directory online - the various Manx almanacs will probably give the names of harbour masters - Manx Museum (enquiries[AT]mnh.gov.im) has a collection
