I am seeking  information of Elizabeth BEST born 1861 ay Sth.Petherton Somerset, also her son Frederick born approx.1885  assumed Sommerset.  thanks   Bryn

Hi Bryn, and welcome to Rootschat.

How sure are you of the birth years? I only ask because I took a look at the 1871 and could find two Elizabeth Bests born South Petherton, who were 11 and 13 in 1871.
A quick glance at the 1891 and they seem to have disappeared (married probably). I found a Frederick Best age 10 living in Somerset with his grandparents but that age seems too far out.
So do you know if Elizabeth eventually married and to who? It's possible they were under another name by 1891.

Hi Heather, Thanks for the welcome and prompt reply..  I found Elizabeth in the 1901 Census Living  in Glamorgan South Wales, married to John Evans, her age was shown as 40yrs. so the EB you have aged 11yrs is a possible. The birth date for Frederick as shown on his gravestone is 23rd.April, 1895. almost certainly out of wedlock. I can find no prove of this, or a date/place of the wedding  of EB to John Evans.   To complicate things even  further.. EB and John Evans gave birth to a son Hugh on the 19th Jan,1887 in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania. We also believe that Frederick did not go to the States with his mother but remained with his Grandparents.  Hope this makes sense .. Bryn

I think the Frederick age 10 in 1891 is unlikely to be yours. Both because of the age and the fact that his grand parents are John and Harriet Best.

this one fits what i am looking for ergarding Elizabeth.. but will have to work on both a  little for further proof.   regarding Frederick,, if he was born out  of wedlock would the birth  be registered?would he have been baptised? Bryn

Hello to you both,

James Best and Mary Best are the farthest back I can trace my own family, currently.  James is my Great Great Grandfather with the same place of birth as what you stated above.  The family migrated to the United States.  I was wondering if you had more information on them or who James Best's parents were? 

I would really like to hear from you, Bryn if you had more information on the family.  Any help would be appreciated.
