Thanks everyone, looks like it should be an Epson when I get round to replacing my Lexmark all-in-one - I'll keep it connected though because I would be lost without my scanner!  Some kind friends have lent me a printer so the panic is over for now.

Thanks again for everyone's advice
Julie

I only use Epson inks,to many problems with compatibles, then again it depends on what you're printing I suppose.

I agree Derek - as I said, I only use compatibles on my 'everyday' proofing printer. The other two have seen nothing but Epson inks ever

I live up in the Highlands and mail order can be difficult but I use a reasonably 'local' firm (on the east coast - Dornoch). I get all my cartridges 'next day'. They do Epson and compatibles and all the others.

Its the colours in compatibles I have problems with Gadget especially on photo
work, some appear to have that orange peel effect, others seem to seperate,I also prefer Epson photo paper,I must have tried every other brand over the years but Epson comes out on top.

I use their watercolour paper - it's deelish  :)

But there are some super papers around now - all the old chemical-based manufacturers have produced papers - I had some super samples from a specialist art paper supplier - cost the earth but wonderful.

Yes the colours are not as good on compats - I know how to read them now, but thinking about it, I very rarely use no 2 printer for anything but straightish printing.

Gadget  - sorry Julie, we are digressing

I also have the x1180 and i have never had a problem with it in the 9 months i have had it.I use it a lot, this machine will have a long life AS long as you never run it when one of the cartridges are empty. Thats goes for all printers in doing this it dies a sad death. Mine did ;D in regard to ink, i always get my Lexmark ink from http://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk/
Black 17 is £12.98 Color 27 £14.39 no middleman so no time to dry up. They have every printer ink you can think of, If you order it on Monday you will get probably Thursday.

Thanks Celia

I have had my X1180 for almost two years, and have been really pleased with it, which is why I am so annoyed that I can't work out what is wrong with it!  How can it print blank pages when the cartridge is far from empty?!  I have put it to one side and will have another mess with it when I have a bit more time.

Regards, Julie

I have just had a look in the lexmark solution center the only thing it says about printing blank pages.Besides the norm, is that to many pages are open on the computer. So it wont print and to close some of them. So if that doesn't work you have invented a problem that is unknown to lexmark ;D ;D ;D
