Crosbie family
« on: Friday 11 August 06 09:14 BST (UK) »
Has anyone come across the following Crosbie family in or around  Dumfriesshire.

Samuel Crosbie, H.M. 39, Foreman Boiler Maker, Scotland
Isabella, Wife, M, 38, Scotland
Agnes, Daur, 16, Scholar, Lancs Liverpool
Margaret, Dau,13, Scholar, Liverpool
David, Son, 11, Scholar, Liverpool
HUGH, Son,10, Scholar, Liverpool
Catherine, Daur, 6, Scholar, Liverpool
Samuel, Son, 1, Liverpool

Samuel had relations around the Dumfries/Dunscore area, Isabella his wife had relatives in the Lockerbie area.  So i assume that if they had moved to Scotland, it would be to one of these two areas.

The last record i have for them, is the 1891 census, liverpool.  They are not recorded on the 1901 census for England and Wales.

Hi Purlin

In case you don't have this, this looks like Samuel's entry in the 1851 Census from www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx:

CROSBIE Agnes, age 3, b. Kirkgunzeon Kbt
CROSBIE David, ROAD SURFACEMAN, age 33, b. Dunscore, Dms
CROSBIE Ellen, age 7, b. Urr Kbt
CROSBIE James, age 10, b. Kirkpatrick Dur
CROSBIE Margaret, age 35, wife, b. Girthon Kbt
CROSBIE Mary, age 9, b. Urr Kbt
CROSBIE Peter, brother of David, Labourer, age 3, b. Kirkmahoe Dms
CROSBIE Robert, brother of David, Labourer, age 3, b. Kirkmahoe Dms
CROSBIE Samuel, age 11 months, b. Kirkgunzeon Kbt

Address: Kirkhouse Cottage(872), Kirkgunzeon, Household No: 2/44

Was Isabella Samuel's second wife? In the 1881 Census, his wife is showing as Catherine?:

Samuel CROSBY, age 28      b. Scotland      Boiler Maker
Catherine CROSBY, age 29  b. Scotland
Agnes B. CROSBY, age 6, b.  Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Margaret C. CROSBY, age 3, b.  Liverpool, Lancashire, England
David CROSBY, age 1, b. Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Address: 32 Havelock St, Everton, Lancashire, England

I've checked the names under Crosb* on SP for the 1901 Census, and don't think they were in Scotland for that Census.

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica

thank you very much for that information. it is very helpful.  i am not sure how to proceed now though. i was fairly certain that they would have gone to Scotland.  i suppose its possible that they were travelling on the night of the census.  i cant think where else they may have gone.

yes, thank you, i had seen the 1851 and 1881 census entries.

yes, Isabella smith was his second wife, mother of Hugh and Samuel.

the family, all apart from Hugh, (at least i dont think Hugh returned) did return to liverpool and infact, they all died in liverpool.

i haven't been able to find Hugh on any records other than the 1896.  Yet from a family diary, i note he married and his wife is probably called Eleanor , they had 2 children a boy and a girl.

so i have a bit of a mystery on my hands.

thanks again Monica,

regards
