whitegates
« on: Saturday 12 August 06 14:14 BST (UK) »
I hope someone can help me.  I have found my family  were living at a place called "Whitegates" in Ingatestone Essex.on the 1901 census. I have tried to look it up  through map sites but cannot fine it even under farms of that name. I wonder if it was called Whitegates back in the 1901 time and now with new owners changed its name. How can I find it as I am shortly coming to Essex to do a family history tour. Welcome reply wanted Wegsgirl

Hi Wegsgirl

Can you work backwards and forwards through the census to try and identify properties/streets either side of Whitegates ???

A 1902 directory lists a Phillip GARDEN (private resident) at Whitegates, Mill Green, Ingatestone

A 1914 directory lists Captain John D F WALFORD-GOSNALL at Whitegates

Was it a farm or could it have been the name of a normal residential property in which case it may not be recorded on any map ???

In addition to the above posting, I have found a recent planning application which relates to the demoliton of a property named "Whitegates" in Little Hyde Lane, Ingatestone CM4 0HJ :(

I wonder if this could be the same property ???

Look at planning applications received 10 April 2006 http://www.brentwood-council.gov.uk/

Hi wegsgirl
Looking at the census route it was not far from Maple Tree Lane, then onto Mill Green, pass The Viper? which was a beer retailer place, then there is WhiteGates and after that there is a place called Redendykes?.

There appears to be a property called Whitegates on Ivy Barnes Road near its junction with Ingatestone Road and MillGreen Road. This juction is just to the north of the village of Mill Green. No idea if this is the property that you are looking for but it is one to put on your list of possibles.

going by the direction of the census route that Ricky has laid out Redindyke farm is still there and is just up the road from the whitegates that I have mentioned above. Maybe it is the one that you are after, after all.
