Missing Parents-HARWOOD,Bolton
« on: Saturday 12 August 06 20:29 BST (UK) »
Were my 3x g.grandparents dreadful parents- or was there a good reason why they left their son, Samuel Allen, in the care of relatives?
Samuel's parents Peter Allen (1823 Harwood)and Alice Heys(1825 Ainsworth) were married at Bolton-le-Moors on New Years Day 1851, and Samuel was born the same year.

I can find no trace of Peter or Alice after this date.
Can anyone find a census record or death for either of them?
Many thanks, Maggie.

Hi Maggie,

Do you know the occupation of Peter Allen?  I have found
2 Peter Allen's in the 1861 Lancashire census of about the right age, but neither with the wife of Alice.

One is in Failsworth, Manchester

Peter Allen, 39 years, Packer of cotton goods, born Newton Heath.
Elizabeth, wife, 42 years, born Liverpool plus 4 children

The other one is in Everton, Lancs

Peter Allen, 38 years, Watch Jeweller, born Birmingham
Ann, wife, age 36 years, born Prescot plus 3 children.

There are a few deaths on freebmd for an Alice Allen
between the years 1851 and 1861.

Hope this helps

Thanks for searching for me Georgie.
The occupations I have for Peter, were a cotton dyer in 1851, from his marriage certificate, and, on his son's marriage certificate in 1875, Peter's occupation is listed as a farmer.
I suspect that Peter's wife, Alice, may well have died and that led to Samuel's upbringing with relatives. The nearest deaths I have found in Bolton were 1854/1857/1859 but no age at death is given for these.
Peter was definately born in Harwood, so unless he fibbed about his place of birth I think your two Peters can be ruled out- but thanks for trying!
Maggie

Hiya Maggie,

In the 1901 census index for Tonge, Bolton is a Peter Allen, 78 years, born Harwood, but he appears to be on his own.
The ref is RG13/3613 folio 34 page 3.

For a full transcription you will have to put a posting up
for a look up giving the ref no.

Thanks Georgie, that reference looks good, as his age matches and his birthplace too. There are a number of my Allens in Tonge in earlier census' so it looks like a good fit- just wish I could discover where he was hiding himself for the previous 50 years!
Maggie.

Thanks Joe, wonder if he struck gold on his farm? Or perhaps his missing 50 years were spent in the South African goldfields! None of our family have ever been wealthy so he obviously didn't find much!!
Maggie.
