Derbyhaven Address
« on: Monday 14 August 06 02:17 BST (UK) »
In the 1841 census I have relatives living in Great Cellar IOM and in both 1881 and 1891 cenus's, the address is given as Big Sella. Both in Derbyhaven.

Can anyone tell me how the name arose?

Thanks

as explained on  http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl?noframes; Cellars in Manx usage are storage places (warehouses) used by merchants - not underground but close to the shoreline - Derbyhaven consists of a short line of houses + other buildings (inc at one time a smelt house) stretching up the neck of the Langness peninsula until it reaches the road running along the bay into Castletown

There is at present a large warehouse like building (converted into private dwellings) called the Herring House almost at the top  of this row of buildings
any thing with a Manx Connection
