Duncan Matheson & Co, Manchester
« on: Monday 14 August 06 14:28 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a letter dated 1915 with the heading reading
Duncan Matheson & Co Manchester.
I have been unable to find out anything regarding this Company - does anyone have any ideas?
I believe it may have been something to do with the Cotton Industry (perhaps in the cotton exchange in Manchester).

I don`t know if there is any sort of directory (other than phone directory) that could help.  I suppose it could have been a private company.

Anyway, if anyone could help I would be grateful.

Hi, Wattsy

In Kelly's 1929

Duncan Matheson & Co. were Cloth Commission Agents & Merchants with offices at 1 North Parade.

These offices were near Parsonage Gardens behind Deansgate, Manchester

The old phone number was CEN 1273

Hope this helps
Regards, Dave

Hi, Wattsy
I think the Commission agents acted on behalf of the manufacturers, using their contacts to take orders from retailers.

But I will bow to somebody's better judgement

Hi,

Living at Woodend,  Dunham Massey, Altrincham, Cheshire on the 1901 census is a Duncan Matheson, aged 80, Widow, Cloth Commision agent, Own account, born Scotland.  The name of the company obviously lived on.

Regards,
Mo

I have a sketch drawing of 'Woodend' in a book called Mansions and Men of Dunham Massey by Frank Bamford (where I was born incidentally).  It was a beautiful looking mansion.  It was built in 1878 and the original owner was a Richard Ogle, Iron Merchant.  'Woodend' later became a Nursing Home, but is no longer standing.

Many of the mansions in Dunham Massey were built by the Cotton barons and Merchants who moved there from Manchester.

Just a wee bit of history  :D
